DrKarthik Chandra Vallam MBBS (JIPMER), MS (Madras Medical College), M.Ch (Tata Memorial Hospital) is a Senior Consultant SurgicalOncologist and Robotic Surgeon at Medicover Hospital, Visakhapatnam.
Having been trained at TMH, Mumbai which is one of the most premier institutions for cancer treatment and training in India, he is a specialist in surgical treatment of various solid organ cancers.Following his M.Ch, he has pursued a specialised residency in gastro-intestinal and pediatric onco-surgery at TMH. He is also the recipient of travel scholarships from ESMO (European Society of Surgical Oncology) and British Society of Gastroenterology for his award winning paper presentations. He has won best paper awards at IASO and ACOS conferences. He has received his Robotic Surgery training at TMH, Mumbai, Keck medical centre, Los Angeles and Intuitive Surgicals, Sunnyavale). He has undergone an ESSO (European Society of Surgical Oncology) advanced training course on Cytoreductive Surgery and HIPEC at Hamburg.
He has been an invited faculty at various international, national and state conferences and has delivered various lectures and surgical video demonstrations in these forums. He has also performed live robotic surgery demonstration (of endometrial cancer surgery) at aFOGSI associated conference in Visakhapatnam. He was the organising secretary for two cancer conferences . He was instrumental in running an academic program for DNB surgical oncology residents at his previous hospital.
He specialises in open, laparoscopic and robotic cancer surgeries. He isa pioneer in Minimal access cancer surgery in the region of NorthCoastal Andhra Pradesh. He is also specialised in the management of extensive peritoneal cancers and has performed Cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC (Hyperthermic intra-peritoneal chemotherapy). VideoAssisted Thoracoscopic Surgery is a key area of interest. His niche areas of expertise include gastrointestinal cancers, breast conservation and oncoplastic surgeries, thoracic cancers, urological cancers, gynaecological cancers and oral cancers.
He is credited with introducing the technique of Sentinel Node Biopsy(for the first time in Andhra Pradesh) which is a very essential tool in the management of various early stage cancers.
In addition to “treatment” of cancers, he is keen on pursuing preventive and palliative oncology as these are often underemphasised aspects of cancer care.
